GLOCK GEN 6: Deep Dive

At a restricted media and distributors meet up event held at the GLOCK U.S. HQ in Smyrna, Georgia, the company premiered its latest offering: the long-awaited 6th Generation of legendary GLOCK pistols.

Frag Out! Magazine was among the select media granted early access to the new Gen 6 family, which includes the GLOCK 17, 19, 45, and the 49 (the latter model is not slated for release in the U.S. market). Depending on market response, the other models will probably join the pack in the future.

The GLOCK Gen 6 pistols will be commercially available starting January 20, 2026, coinciding with their official public debut at the SHOT Show 2026 in Las Vegas. Just to remind you, the Gen 5 was released in 2017, so almost 9 years ago.

For those anticipating a radical design change, the Gen 6 is characterized by GLOCK’s established philosophy of evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, development. Contrary to widespread speculations and rumors in months ahead of release, the gun does not incorporate a modular Fire Control Unit (FCU). Instead, the Gen 6 refines the classic design, aligning it with current market trends and incorporating detailed user-driven feedback.

KEY UPGRADES IN GLOCK GEN 6

The most significant functional and ergonomic enhancements in the GLOCK Gen 6 pistols are focused on the ergonomics, the trigger, and the slide.

FRAME AND ERGONOMICS

The GLOCK Gen 6 polymer frame features the most noticeable modifications. The grip profile is marginally less bulky than the Gen 5, incorporating a subtle taper in the thumb rest area, referred to as the palm swell. This improves fit, particularly for shooters with smaller hands, and provides a generally more secure feel, even when shooting with gloves.

A new frame texture, designated RTF6 (Rough Textured Frame), has been introduced. It represents a compromise between the aggressive adhesion of the earlier RTF2 piramide-like pattern which some loved and most hated and the texture found on the Gen 4 and Gen 5 models (the RTF4). RTF6 is engineered to ensure maximum grip in adverse conditions (wet, dirty, or even blood contaminated hands) while mitigating abrasion risks to clothing or skin.

A factory-molded beaver tail has been integrated into the frame to enhance control and prevent potential slide contact with the shooter’s hand. Additional back straps are included, without the beaver tail, to increase trigger reach if desired. For the first time, the frame includes a factory undercut of the trigger guard, facilitating a higher grip on the gun. This modification, often sought in aftermarket custom shops, significantly improves weapon controls.

Ambidextrous RTF6 textured Thumb Rest/Gas Pedal has been added in the front. This provides an additional leverage point for the support hand’s thumb without increasing the pistol’s external dimension. There is also a fence below the slide release to prevent accidental activation when shooting with very high grip. Despite structural changes to the frame, the GLOCK Gen 6 pistols maintain full compatibility with existing Gen 5 holsters.

TRIGGER GROUP

All Gen 6 models will come standard with a factory flat-faced trigger shoe which maintains the Safe Action System for uncompromising safety and reliability. This geometry supports improved and more intuitive finger placement. The trigger is also positioned closer to the grip, resulting in a slightly reduced trigger travel.

ORS SLIDE

All Gen 6 slides are factory ready for MRDS mounting via the new Optic Ready System (ORS). The previous MOS system, which relied on metal adapter plates, has been replaced. ORS utilizes a polymer “shim” that is inserted into the slide cut, allowing the optic to be screwed directly into this base. This simplifies the mounting process and eliminates the potential for long screws—a known issue in the MOS system—to interfere with the extractor mechanism. The polymer ORS shim also serves as a crush-washer to absorb and dampen recoil energy directed at the red dot. Currently, three of shims are included with the gun (RMR, DPP and C-More footprint). ACRO attachment system is in the works.

Vertical serrations are present on both the front and rear of the slide to facilitate positive manipulation during reloading or chamber checks. Unlike the Gen 5, these cuts are tapered: deeper on the upper portion of the slide and shallower toward the bottom.

Barrel was slightly changed and will become incompatible with previous generations. The internal geometry of the slide and striker mechanism has been redesigned. Specifically, the ridges in the firing pin channel have been raised, and the locking block’s shape has been modified. These internal revisions are aimed at preventing unauthorized conversions to selective-fire capability—a response to recent issues identified within the U.S. market. GLOCK also decided to return to single captive recoil spring as it was before Gen 4 and Gen 5. Everything old is new again.

In addition to the product launch, invited guests toured the advanced manufacturing facilities and the training center of the U.S. division. The company emphasized its commitment to education and after-sales support through the GLOCK PRO program, which provides comprehensive training for both end-users and certified armorers.

We would like to thank GLOCK Ges.m.b.H, GLOCK Inc. and Kaliber.pl for invitation to this event.
